Originally posted on The Jerusalem Post on 16 Dec 2008 Wearing white masks to conceal their identities, more than 500 Eritrean asylum seekers took to the streets of Tel Aviv Tuesday to protest what they describe as the Israeli government's refusal to recognize them as refugees and grant them certain rights under the United Nation's convention on the status of refugees, to which Israel is party. |

RE: Appeal to the plight of Eritrean asylum seekers in the State of Israel Dear Honorable Minister Sheetrit, We, the undersigned concerned individuals and human rights organizations, duly note that in the past three years the State of Israel has received 4,500 Eritrean asylum seekers. We also commend the State of Israel’s decision of granting some Eritreans temporary work permits on humanitarian grounds and for sparing them all from risks of deportation back to Egypt or Eritrea which would have put their life in real danger. We also wish to use this opportunity to state a very sad deportation of close to 1200 Eritreans from Egypt this year more 700 of whom have just ended in prisons of the repressive regime in Eritrea. |

From 6 to 15 November 2008 I visited Phoenix, Arizona, on invitation of the MA Program in Social Justice and Human Rights at the Arizona State University and the Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Phoenix. With some other Eritreans I was invited to speak on human right situation in Eritrea. But, this is not exclusively a report of what I did, which was not important, but rather a glimpse of what a dedicated group of Phoenicians have been doing in regard to human rights abuses in Eritrea. This group, growing in numbers from time to time, was introduced to the human rights abuses in Eritrea because of what happened to Aster. They are friends of Aster – friends of the Eritreans behind bars. |
