LIBYA 430 Eritrean nationals

According to reports, 430 Eritrean nationals, including over 50 women and children, are currently detained by Libyan authorities and are facing imminent deportation to Eritrea. Reports suggest that the Libyan authorities may have beaten and raped or sexually abused some detainees, and some detainees may even have died in custody as a result of such torture or other ill-treatment.

Sources say writer and journalist Fessehaye "Joshua" Yohannes has died in detention

Credible Eritrean sources in Asmara and abroad have told Reporters Without Borders that poet and playwright Fessehaye "Joshua" Yohannes , who was a journalist with the now-banned weekly Setit, died in detention on 11 January.

An urgent letter of appeal briefing the predicament of around 250 Eritreans asylum seekers who at present are facing imminent danger of deportation to Eritrea is submitted in person by Simon M. Weldehaimanot to the current Chairperson of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, her Excellency Madame Sanji Mmasenono MONAGENG. Simon was induced to file the appeal after receiving a cell phone text message from Egypt from one of the asylum seekers facing deportation. Simon, who is now in Banjul, was also able to shortly brief her Excellency on the phone on the real risk of ill treatment when the asylum seekers return to Eritrea. Full text of the letter appears below.

In order to further update and consolidate its relation, the Network of Eritrean Civic Societies (NECS) in Europe, has been appealing since December 2006 for a meeting with all the offices in the European Council, the European Commission and also with the European Council on Refugees and Exiles (ECRE) Brussels. The appeal was replied by the offices of European Council for Human Rights and European Council of Refugees and Exile (ECRE). In January a date was set by the EU Human Right Council to meet the delegates of NECS on the 14.02-2007.
